CIMP 335 Adam Lane (bass) Trio feat. Vinny Golia
(soprano & tenor
saxes) and Vijay Anderson (drums)
Music Degree Zero
- Here is the mate to CIMP 325 and—lest there be any—all doubts
will be squelched by the power and strength of this trio. The accolades were
universal in their comments on the excitement and power this trio generated
on the session's first release. This is its complement and is in every way
equal to the first volume. Hot and intense, this is a Jazz power trio. Recorded
Feb. 24&25, 2005.
- Spin with this EARth - Free - Without Being - Running Upsidedown - Dance -
Birthday Song - To Avenue X
CIMP 334 Ernie Krivda (tenor saxophone) 5tet with Bob Fraser (guitar) Dominick
Farinacci(trumpet) Jeff Halsey (bass) Carmen Intorre (drums)
Stellar Sax
- One of the most distinctive and uncompromised stylists in Jazz, this new release
from the quintet offers up four extended explorations including some new Krivda
compositions, plus a fascinating solo invention off "Stella By Starlight." Sharing
the front-line as he has on four other Krivda releases is Dominick Farinacci
(trumpet) while Bob Fraser (g) and Carmen Intorre (d) also return. And Jeff
Halsey's big bass finally reunites with Krivda after a long association that
began in 1985. Recorded June 15 & 16, 2005.
- Alcara li Fusi - Adagio - For Jacqueline - The Autumn Carnivale - Starlight
Musing
CIMP 333 Bobby Few (piano) Avram Fefer (soprano & tenor saxophones) 4tet
with Hilliard Greene (bass) Newman Taylor Baker (drums)
Sanctuary
- Messrs. Few and Fefer have been collaborating since the mid 1990's but this
is the first time they have recorded in Quartet and the results are strong.
As Avram Fefer writes, "…a great couple days… a great piano… stimulating
company." Bobby Few has been on the scene since his Ayler days of the
1960's and he represents some of the best of the classic Free period. Avram
Fefer began to make a name for himself among musicians in the 1990's; he represents
the rich future of this music. Here is a finished work for the discriminate
and mature listener. Recorded May 7, 2005.
- Far to Few - Sanctuary - for Frank (Lowe) - Club Foot - Boobree - City Life
CIMP 332 William Gagliardi (alto, soprano, & tenor saxophones) 5tet with
John Carlson (trumpet, pocket trumpet) 5tet with Ken Wessel (guitar) Dave Hofstra
(bass) Lou Grassi (drums)
Memories of Tomorrow
- This is the third recording of Bill Gagliardi's (AKA Billy Gags) quintet,
a group that has now managed to stay together since 2000. What has made this
possible is that every member of the group wants to play together and is equally
inspired both by one another and Bill's Gagliardi's music. Hear why people
continue to say "How come I've never heard of this guy? His music is wonderful." Recorded
May 26 & 27, 2005.
- Coup d’é-tat follies - Let’s Play - Memories of Tomorrow
- Cosmic Monster - The Key to the Gates - The Question Unanswered

voice, bells, whistles) 4tet with Ed Crockett (bass) Bert Harris (bass) Harold
E. Smith (drums, conch, didjeridoo)
Pam Africa
- Inspired by the African family (of Philadelphia), Pam Africa offers up one
of Byard Lancaster's more realized, powerful, and rewarding recordings. A mixture
of standards and originals, the ten cuts bring together the musical grouping
of two basses and percussion. This captures Byard at the top of his abilities
and represents one-half of a very special time. Recorded April 11, 2005.
- Pam Africa - Softly As In a Morning Sunrise - Capetown - I’m an Old
Cowhand - Blue Train - Magic Zone - Mr. P.C. - A Tropical Satellite - Bye Bye

CIMP 330: Prince Lasha (clarinet, flute, alto & soprano saxophones, piccolo) & Odean Pope (tenor saxophone) Trio with Tyrone Brown (bass) - Craig McIver (drums)
The Mystery of Prince Lasha
- Prince Lasha returns to the recording scene. Fifty years ago, the Texas sax man and schoolmate of Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman, and Charlie Moffett was part of the original cast of new music improvisers. Here he's in the company of Odean Pope and his trio—a formidable group by themselves. As the Producer's Notes encourage, "Enjoy the music and the adjustments it might bring." Recorded April 5, 2005
- Coleman Captain Hornblower - Many, many, many, many Miles Away - Selmer - Dinka man Warrior - Eric Dolphy - John the Gospel - Prince Lasha - Book of John - Divine message
CIMP 329: Chris Kelsey (soprano saxophone) Trio with Francois Grillot (bass) - Jay Rosen (drums)
Wishing You Were Here
- Kelsey is back after a couple years' hiatus and he hasn't lost any of his power, intensity, or considerable compositional skills. He remains one of the most distinct and intense soprano sax men around. Listen and evaluate for yourself. Recorded March 23 & 24, 2005
- Jam Session - Sea Cricket - Truculent - Misquotate - Spright - Unoriginally Titled - Pop, Grunt, Squeal - Postcard
CIMP 328: Trio-X: Joe McPhee (tenor sax, flugelhorn, pocket trumpet) - Dominic Duval (bass) - Jay Rose (drums)

- Sienna Sun - Wegatchie Run - Burning Wood - Dedicated to You, Joe - Stella by Starlight - In Evidence - Lonely Woman - Short Eyes - Legacy (Celebrating Bill Dixon’s October Revolution of 1964) - Voices - A Valentine in the Fog of War
CIMP 327: Jay Rosen (drums)
Songs for Samuel
- When is a drum solo release more than just listening to a solo drummer? When it's a release by Jay Rosen. Inspired by the recent death of his father, this 12-part suite is both heartfelt and hip. Jay's been working toward this for about a decade. He's made a believer out of us and now he'll make a believer out of you. Fun for the whole family. Or, go for your own private pleasure. Recorded March 21, 2005
- Songs for Samuel Parts 1 - 12
CIMP 326: Stephen Gauci (tenor saxophone) Trio - Todd Nicholson (bass) - Jeremy Carlstedt (drums)
First, Keep Quiet
- Already heralded as a new and exciting voice, tenor saxist Stephen Gauci is front and center with compositions, concepts, and executions that, if nothing else, are clearly not the same old same old. There are lots of "new" names out there - this is one worth hearing. You have our word. Recorded March 3 & 4, 2005
- First Keep Quiet - Neither Free Nor Bound - Otolarynology - What’s New - Better Wake Up Now - From The First, Not A Thing Is - Mighty Jerem-I - This - Emptiness - The Reaper - Thy Daily Grinder
CIMP 325 Adam
Lane (bass) Trio feat. Vinny Golia (soprano & tenor saxes)
and Vijay Anderson (drums)
Zero Degree Music
- Adam Lane has quickly established
himself as a musician of depth and quality through a small but exceptional
group of recordings. And here is another outstanding
effort. This is not just a trio: it is three well integrated artists playing
music that will satisfy the most demanding listeners. And for fans of Vinny
Golia, this is arguably some of his most dynamic sax playing on record. Recorded
February 24 & 25, 2005.
- To Avenue X - Spin with the EARth - In our time - Intonations for Being -
Clouds - The Genius of El Segundo (for Lynn Johnston) - Dance - Relaxing with
Vinny
CIMP 324 Avram Fefer (tenor sax, bass clarinet, flute) - Michael Bisio (bass)
duo
Painting Breath, Stoking Fire
- Avram Fefer constructed
this 12-part suite and the duet offers up a full canvas of music as it
pushes and keeps everything inventive & musical and the listener's
interest & attention. A small group but full listening. Recorded January
18, 2005.
- Suite for 2005: Ancestral Voices - BC Reverie / Inner Child - Love (Keepin'
on) / Rio Largo y Sinuoso - Miss Understood / Glide / Rumblings (ear to the

CIMP 323 Michael
Bisio (bass) Quartet - Avram Fefer (alto, sop, & tenor
saxes, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute) - Stephen Gauci (tenor sax) - Jay Rosen
(drums)
Connections
- Michael Bisio, the highly respected
Pacific West Coast bassist/composer, put together these compositions specifically
for this reed and rhythm quartet.
Wonderful music which contains the composition "Basic Deconstruction"?a
piece that captures an event we believe is unique in recording history. That's
a teaser to get you to listen. That aside, this music stands on its own. Recorded
January 17 & 18, 2005.
- Blue State - Basic Deconstruction - History of a Mystery - Swa
Swu Swi - Zephyr
- Drum Thing - Sometimes I Feel - Zephyr
CIMP 322 Khan Jamal (vibes) Quintet - Byard Lancaster (alto sax) - Grachan
Moncur III (trombone, voice) - Dylan Taylor (bass) - Dwight James (drums)
Black Awareness
- Khan Jamal's outings are always
clearly drawn and conceptualized. Here the distinct vibest brings along long-time
associates to share in the fun and fascination
of the music's exposition. An unexpected event comes on the last track ("Sonny's
Back) when Grachan Moncur offers up an ad-libbed vocal. Another distinctly
Jamalian outing. Recorded January 10 & 11, 2005.
- One
Comes First - Riff Raff - Believe
- Black Awareness - Nubian Queen - Bloom - Sonny's Back Pt. 1 & Pt. 2
CIMP 321 David Taylor (bass tbn) - Steve Swell (tbn) Quintet with Billy Bang
(violin) - Tomas Ulrich (cel) - Ken Filiano (bass)
Not Just....
- Gad. Two trombones and strings!
But when the trombones are Dave Taylor and Steve Swell and the strings are
Bang, Ulrich, and Filiano, you know this is
going to be fun. A five-sided circle that is everything you'd expect from this
meeting of fertile musical minds. Over 270 cumulative years in the making,
its listening pleasures should last easily that long. Recorded January 5 & 6,
2005.
- ETA-Now - SOFAR channel - String Theory - 3 Moon Skies Are Not Rare/ Interplanetary
Stroll Time - NOT JUST - Down Home - Vamps Dance - Lament - Hoppy Daze is Here
Again
CIMP 320 Trio-X:
Joe McPhee (tenor sax) - Dominic Duval (bass) - Jay Rosen (drums)
The Sugar Hill Suite
- The latest from Trio-X
has as its centerpiece "The Sugar Hill Suite," an exceptionally
beautifully-structured 16-minute improv that is a stunning example of Trio-X's
skills and the genius of the genre. Recorded October 19, 2004.
- For Agusta Savage
- Triple Play (For Jillian, Grace, & Dominic) - Sometimes I Feel
Like a Motherless Child - Drop Me Off in Harlem - The Sugar Hill
Suite (For Samuel Rosen) - Little Sunflower - Monk’s Waltz
- Goin’ Home
CIMP 319 John
Gunther (bass clarinet, soprano & tenor sax) Trio with Leo Huppert
(bass), Jay Rosen (drums)
In This World
- This trio has been the
core for John Gunther's previous four CIMP discs. For this date they return
to the original trio root of 1997 and boldly address eight Gunther originals
including the hippest cowboy type tune (that's also it's title) to come
off the range in many a moon. Tucked in among the always memorable Gunther
compositions is one by Monk ("Ruby My Dear"). Recorded October
13, 2004.
- Sneaky Blues -
Another Stroll - Marksman - Ruby My Dear - Get the Low Down - Cowboy
Type Tune - Waltz for Paige - In This World - Anthem for Hope
CIMP 318 Ken Wessel (guitar) - Ken Filiano (bass) - Lou Grassi (drums)
Jawboning
- There may be better
known guitarists but none of them get to the heart of an improvisation
better than Ken Wessel. A sideman on other CIMP sessions, we've
been waiting for him to stand up and do his own date. The anticipation
is justified as you'll hear on this mostly original music which also includes "I
Remember You" and "Softly As In a Morning Sunrise." Recorded
September 9 & 10, 2004.
- I Remember You - Jawboning - Behind the Mirror - Softly as in a Morning Sunrise
- Sunset - Collectivity - Diminutive Innuendos.
CIMP 317 Marc
Pompe (vcl) with Curt Warren (guitar) - Nick Tountas (bass) Rusty Jones
(drums)
Lost in the Stars
- Marc Pompe is a Jazz
singer. At 68 years this is only his third release and it's on CIMP, so
you know he must be the real thing. Backed by a trio equal to his hipness,
he makes memorable Pompe interpretations of 14 Jazz standards and 1 original.
Hip, tender, and poignant: another original voice. Recorded August 30 & 31,
2004.
- Lucky

- Hi-Fly - Lost in the Stars.
CIMP 316 Burton
Greene (piano) & Roy Campbell (trumpets) Quartet with Adam Lane (bass),
Lou Grassi (drums)
Isms Out
- Playing the music of
Bill Evans, Jim Hall, Ali Akbar Khan, and its own originals, the Burton
Greene-Roy Campbell 4tet goes pretty straight ahead but without compromise
as four strong instrumental voices document their music following an East
Coast tour. The expressions and themes are exceptional. It's been almost
two decades since Burton recorded in quartet and over 30 years since he
recorded with trumpet. This is Roy's first recording with Burton. Recorded
June 29, 2004.
- Booker’s
Lament - Careful - Carnival of Mother Kali - Brother Yusef - Burty’s
Boudoir Bump...Bop - Angels of Sirius - Epilogue.
CIMP 315 Gebhard Ullmann (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet) - Steve Swell (trombone)
Quartet with Hilliard Greene (bass) - Barry Altschul (drums)
Desert Songs & Other Landscapes
- Gebhard Ullmann, whose
formidable European reputation has yet to find its match in North America,
joins with
Steve Swell - one of the most inventive, active,
and touring trombonists on the creative improvised music scene
- for a program that reflects the travels (and travails?) of their lives.
And
with Barry Altschul
and Hill Greene handling the rhythm, you know there's no featherbedding
on this road trip. Recorded June 22 & 23, 2004.
- Box Set - Flutist
With Hat And Shoe - Seven 9-8 - Camel's Gait/Desert
Sands Part 1 - Under The Other - Desert... Bleue... East.
CIMP 314 Mary
Anne Driscoll (piano) & Paul
Murphy (drums)
Inside Out
- This musical partnership
goes back over 30 years and it shows. This is a remarkably precise and
explosive post Bop duo. These 16
tracks explore a number of themes,
colors, and passions. It invites close-listening scrutiny as the more
you listen the more you will be impressed. Recorded at Gilbert
Recital Hall, Canton, NY,
June 15, 2004.
- Point of Reference
- High Street - The Footbridge - Elene - Cymbalism - Thea - Out There
- Byron’s Tune - Sonny - New Way - Off the Top - Inside Out

Trade - Epilogue.
CIMP 313 Lou Grassi (drums, percussion) Quartet with Rob Brown (alto saxophone)
Ken Filiano (bass) - Herb Robertson (trumpet, pocket trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn)
Avanti Galoppi
- Lou Grassi knows how
to pick 'em and mix 'em. Here he renews his associations with 3 of the
most powerful music personalities on the scene, but united
for the first time in the recorded spotlight. Seven cuts
especially composed and
prepared for the occasion. Everyone has a feature and there's plenty
of style and form to study and enjoy. Recorded June 8, 2004.
- Underground Elevation
- Avanti Galoppi - Dancing Shadows - Lake George - Ballad of 9/11 -
Squatting Women - Willie B.
CIMP 312 Marco Eneidi (alto saxophone) - Lisle Ellis (bass) - Peter Valsamis
(drums)
American Roadwork
- Here's a power trio
in approach and imagination. Eleven originals join the Blues classic, "Baby,
Please Don't Go." Edgy music at its best. Recorded
May 17 & 18, 2004.
- Baby, Please Don’t

- Short & Clean.
CIMP 311 John
O’Gallagher (alto & soprano
saxophones) - Masa Kamaguchi (bass) - Jay Rosen (drums)
Rules of Invisibility Vol.2
- The follow-up to the
critically acclaimed "Rules of Invisibility Vol.1." John
O'Gallagher, is a thinking man's saxist. This was a highly productive
and creative time in The Spirit Room during which lightning literally struck,
and it's all
captured on this volume of 9 constructions and deconstructions. Recorded
February 3 & 4, 2004.
- Bouncin’ Billie
(take 1) - Later, Bird - Don’t Move - Borneo - Olo’s
- Together - Post Adriatic Sea - Premonition - Bouncin’ Billie
(take 2).
CIMP 310
Scott Rosenberg (tenor sax) - Todd Margasak (cornet) - Kyle Hernandez (bass)
- Tim Daisy (drums)
Blood
- This quartet debuted in 1999 (Cadence
Jazz Records 1135) and this second recording updates its intricate and unpredictable
music. Here is a classic pianoless
quartet that can evoke a sense of Ornette & Don Cherry with a slight essence
of Chet in the mix. But the 9 non-traditional compositions give these musical
talents plenty of space to exercise their own post Bop personalities. Recorded
May 10 & 11, 2004.
- TDY - Califa - ADSTDR - OHS II - A1 - JTY - RRMTRRM - DRR - HMNQR
CIMP 309
Chris Kelsey (soprano saxophone) - Steve Swell (trombone) - Francois Grillot
(bass) - Jay Rosen (drums)
Renewel
- Chris Kelsey is back and he's lost none of his passion nor intensity and continues
to be one of the strongest and most original soprano sax voices on the scene.
Here's a chance for listeners to hear now what critics will still be raving
about in 15 years. Tough stuff. Recorded April 7, 2004.
- A Romp in the Dark - Charlie Parker's Last Will and Testament - Reason
Excluded - Enough / No Tell - E and Me.
CIMP 308
James Finn (tenor saxophone) - Dominic Duval (bass) - Warren Smith (drums)
Faith in a Seed
- James Finn is no young lion, but
this is just his second recording. His first (Cadence Jazz Records 1170)
met with strong critical acclaim often mixed with
the skepticism of "Is this a fluke?" Well, CIMP now has recorded
him and there's no chance of foolin' in the mix. This will only confirm that
the power and flow of ideas from the dynamic tenor man is no fluke. Prepare
to deal with Mr. Finn and this master rhythm section as he builds musical moments.
Recorded March 16 & 17, 2004.
- Faith in a Seed - Struggling to See the Sun - Willing Through Darkness - A
Weathered Spirit Resolute - All the Love Shining On - Bright Leaves Yellow

Bomb on Me.
CIMP 306
Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre (tenor saxophone) - Adam Lane (bass) - Jesse Dulman
(tuba) - Ravish Momin (drums)
Paths to Glory
- Kalaparush & The Light have,
over the past 3 years, put forth one of the most distinct group sounds of
the new millennium. After 3 recordings solidifying
that group sound, they join forces with the soulful power of Adam Lane's bass. This
was such a success there was discussion about incorporating the bassist
into the group whole. What a novel
way to grow a group. Who knows? At this
rate, 15 years from now it could be Kalaparush & The Light Big Band. If
so, it all started here. Recorded March 4 & 5, 2004.
- Dream Of... - Dance - Date - Suite for My Mother - Five #2 - Five
#1 - Let
Us All Relax - Confirmation.
CIMP 305 Patrick Brennan: Sonic Openings Under Pressure (Steve Swell, tbn;
Hilliard Greene, b; Newman Taylor Baker, d)
The Drum is Honor Enough
- Listening to Patrick Brennan's
music is a bit like looking at a bowl that has been shattered and reassembled
but whose fit isn't quite right?you know
what
it is when looking at it, but it requires some reassessment to take it all
in. Extensive Artist and Producer Notes may take you one listen just to get
through, another listen to digest, but by the third listen the joy and genius
of this concert should be evident. A valuable addition to this veteran's slight
but growing discography. Recorded February 17 & 18, 2004.
- hot red - shadow
doin' - rough hue - drums not bombs - permeations gumvindaboloo (section
1) - permeations gumvindaboloo (section 2) - permeations gumvindaboloo (section
3) - permeations gumvindaboloo (section
4).
CIMP 304 John
O'Gallagher (alto & soprano
saxes) - Masa Kamaguchi (b) - Jay Rosen (d)
Rules of Invisibility Vol.1
- Flowing music circuitously arrived at with almost a minimalist coloring marks
the listening experience of this nowhere-to-hide trio. The music here brings
up to date a deconstructive tradition pioneered by the likes of Lee Konitz
and Warne Marsh 50 years ago. Free associative, fluid, and hip. Recorded
February 3, 2004.
- Invisibility - Leakey's Bag - It's Very Deep - Folksong - Titans Stride -
Point Time - I Love You Two - You Ain't All That.
CIMP 303 Odean Pope (tenor sax) Quartet - Carl Grubbs (alto sax) - Tyrone
Brown (b) - Craig McIver (d)
Two Dreams
- Odean Pope is a master,
arguably one of a handful of great tenor saxists on the scene today. Always
up for the challenge, there is nothing casual or throwawy
on a Pope/CIMP encounter and this one is no exception. Hard, thoughtful,
and clearly defined, this is classic Bop of the post Bop era. Recorded January
22, 2004.
- Turn Me Loose - The
Foliage - Quick - Two Dreams - Seed of the Land - Fifth House - AnDar -
Lines for Four.
CIMP 302 Ernie Krivda (tenor sax) - Dominick Farinacci (tpt) - Bob Fraser
(g) - Kurt Kotheimer (b) - Carmen Intorre (d)
Plays Ernie Krivda Vol. 2
- Volume 2 of
Krivda Plays Krivda - still one of the most identifiable tenor stylists
in Jazz. If after all these years you don't
know Ernie's music?get to it. This is a fine place to start. Recorded July
24 & 25, 2003.
- Beauchamp
Ride - Irv's
at Midnight - Three Legged Dance - Dele - Passage - A Winter's Waltz.
CIMP 301 Jimmy
Halperin (soprano & tenor
saxophones) - Dominic Duval (bass) - Jay Rosen
Joy & Gravitas
- Jimmy Halperin
has made very few records over the past 30 years and, while new,
this sounds like nothing he's done before. Here it gets
physical with some of the Jazz liturgy turning it every which way. If
you're a fan of tunes like "Tunisia," "Don't Explain," "'Round
Midnight," etc., but tired of hearing them, this release will refresh
in its new and unafraid perspective. Recorded January 14 & 15, 2004.

saxophone) - Roy Campbell (trumpet, pocket trumpet, flugelhorn) - Paul Smoker
(trumpet) - Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet)
Jalolu
- Perhaps this material might be thought
of as composition: improvised composition or structured instant composition.
The leader mapped out this session
for close to a year before its formal execution, and the results are both quirky
and comfortable. Recorded Oct. 27 & 28, 2003
- Boogie On Lenjeno - Seruba
(take 2) - Mwindo - Go (for Adam Rudolph) - Jumpin In (for Eric Dolphy) -

CIMP 299 Devorah
Day (vocals) & Dominic
Duval (bass)
Standard
- Here is a starkly original Jazz
singer, a true Jazz singer who will grab you with her originality and hold
you with her unpredictability. With
just Dominic Duval's bass accompaniment, there's nowhere to hide over the
program of 9 standards and 2 originals. And with talent like this, there
is no need to hide. Recorded Oct. 20 & 21, 2003.

recorded in real stereo, the CIMP way - with clarity, space and accurate
dynamics. Everything about this recording will excite. You'll have to hear
it to
believe
it. Recorded at The Tsai Performance Center at Boston University, Boston,

Hear and Now
- People still marvel at Bill Gagliardi's
talent and why they've never heard of him for his first 50 years. Well, here
is part 2 of CIMP 291
to give them more to marvel at. Recorded July 7 & 8, 2003.

here is the second part. A breath-taking
encounter. Recorded
May 20, 2003.
CIMP 295 Mark Dresser (bass) - Ray Anderson (trombone)
Nine Songs Together
- Here’s a fun combination
that produces so much from so little. Thirteen tracks that, as the Producer’s
Notes point out “is really a set

CIMP 294 Odean Pope (tenor saxophone) - Khan Jamal (vibraphone) - Arthur Harper
(bass) - Allen Nelson (drums)
Nothing Is Wrong
- It shouldn’t be
hard for Odean Pope and Khan Jamal to make distinctive music as they are
both distinctive voices. Here they are joined by
2 other Philadelphia-based veterans and a sum total of about 160 years
of experience
for a program of originals that should tell you that nothing is
wrong but more importantly everything is right. Recorded August 13 & 14,
2003.
- Almost
Like Me Part II - Nothing is Wrong - Three - The Spirit Room (take 3) - The Magnificent
One - The Rhythm Thang - Voice - The Spirit
Room (take 1)
CIMP 293 Ernie Krivda (tenor saxophone) - Dominick Farinacci (trumpet) - Bob
Fraser (guitar) - Kurt Kotheimer (bass) - Carmen Intorre (drums)
Plays Ernie Krivda
- Ernie Krivda, one of
the most distinctive saxophone stylists, plays Ernie Krivda, one of the
most distinctive Jazz composers. Ernie Krivda is the complete artist
and is an instantly recognizable stylist. If after 30 years on the scene
you still have not tasted his treats, this is a good place to begin. Recorded
July
24 & 25, 2003.
- Blue Hokum - Passage
- The Jerry Turn - Beauty Passing - The Bebop Interlude - Panhandle
Hook
CIMP 292 Steve Swell (trombone) - Will Connell (alto sax, flute, bass clarinet)
- Roy Campbell (trumpet, flute) - Charles Burnham (violin) - Francois Grillot
(bass) - Kevin Norton (percussion)
Suite for Players, Listeners and other Dreamer
- Over the 8 years Steve
Swell has been recording for CIMP, he has produced a little less than
a dozen projects, all of them distinct and purposeful. This
latest effort may be his most ambitious to date, a large scale work
that retains the intimacy and personality of a smaller work with the
power and
impact of
the larger concept. A solid statement from a trombonist now considered
to be a major talent on the post Bop, creative improvised music scene.
Recorded July
16 & 17, 2003.
- Prelude to a Prelude
- Groove Merchants of Redwood - Outside Inn - Calling All Travelers-

CIMP 291 William Gagliardi (tenor saxophone, thumbpiano) - John Carlson (trumpet)
- Ken Wessel (guitar) - Dave Hofstra (bass) - Lou Grassi (drums)
NHLAHLA
- Saxman/composer
Gagliardi waited over 50 years to make his first recording (CIMP 242),
a date which was met with critical acclaim and a sense of “Where
has this artist been hiding?” Now he reunited the quartet and adds
trumpeter John Carlson for another quirky and dynamic concert of 7 new
Gagliardi compositions.
Recorded July 7 & 8, 2003.
- Nhlahla
- Henderson - The Loneliest Monk - Glitches in the Sky - Walking the
Bar - Hearthstone Conference - The Oracle of Pat Riot
CIMP 290 Charles Eubanks (piano)
Birds of Baghdad
- This is Charles’ follow-up
to his award-nominated first solo recording (CIMP 250). Over the 9 tracks
here, Charles explores only 3 standards (Trinkle
Tinkle/ Dig/ Cup Bearers) mixed in with his soulfully probing original
narratives. Recorded June 24, 2003, Canton, NY.
- Landscape
(take 3) - Making
Overtures (My Motives/ Pensiveness/ Solace) - Trinkle Tinkle - Dig - How
Deep is the Ocean - Cup Bearers (Dedicated to Tommy Flanagan)
- Birds of Baghdad - Roadmap to Swing - Landscape (take 4)
CIMP 289 Paul Dunmall
(soprano & tenor
saxes) - Paul Rogers (A.I.L. bass) - Kevin Norton (drums, vibes)
Rylickolum: For Your Pleasure
- This trio (all masters
of spontaneous improvisation) is a case of strength on strength. It’s about development, listening, communication, and content.
And it’s all here on 3 extended originals that will hold the listeners
and reward their listening. Recorded May 19, 2003, Rossie, NY.
CIMP 288 Tom Abbs (bass, tuba) - Brian Settles (tenor sax, flute) - Okkyung
Lee (cello) - Chad Taylor (drums, vibes)
Conscription
- Form and finesse are what
this music exposed. Tom Abbs is becoming a force in the NYC area, but his
talents are on a world scale. As this recording demonstrates,
even at the beginning of a career, Tom Abbs is producing distinctive music.
Recorded April 21 & 22, 2003, Rossie, NY.
- Redundant
Triangulation - Diametric Escalation - Conscription - Turbulence - Dichotomy - Hypertension
- Anti-torpidity - Reconciled Dissolution
CIMP 287 Luther Thomas (alto sax) - Ethan Mann - (guitar) - Brian Smith (bass)
- Cliff Barbaro (drums)
Leave It to Luther
- The distinct energized
sound of Luther Thomas is all over the 9 cuts on this CD which includes "Groovin' High," "Body & Soul," and "'Round
Midnight." Unexpected is the presence of Ethan Mann’s hip and
complementary guitar work. Like Luther, this music is irrepressible. Recorded
April 15, 2003,
Rossie, NY.
- Leave It To Luther - Belona - Tatjana - Body and Soul - Groovin' High - Luther's Theme - Nova Zembla
- Up South - 'Round Midnight
CIMP 286 Avram Fefer (tenor & soprano
saxes, clarinet, bass clarinet) - Ken Filiano (bass) - Tomas Ulrich (cello)
- Jay Rosen (drums)
Shades of the Muse
- A strong player, a discriminating
musician and a talented composer, this is just one of a handful of releases
Avram Fefer has committed to lead during
the run of his career. Here he is in the exhilarating company of the power
strings of Ken Filiano and Tomas Ulrich, arguably two of the boldest improvising
string players on the scene. Holding it all down is Jay Rosen, the remarkably
instinctive and sensitive drummer. Recorded April 7 & 8, 2003, Rossie,
NY.
- Shepp in Wolves' Clothing - Love Crept In (Again) - Gates of Baghdad
- Oblique Departures - Brother Ibrahim - BC Reverie - Sacred Passage

CIMP 285
Steve Swell’s (trombone) New York BrassWood
Trio (AKA Poets of the Now) with Tom Abbs (bass/tuba) and Geoff Mann (drums/cornet)
Still in Movement
- Steve Swell calls this
his New York BrassWood Trio; we’re
not sure why. What the trio offers is a chance for Steve to offer up some of
his compositional
delights along with the technical and improvising pleasures of this hip little
trio. Another distinctive Steve Swell-led recording. Recorded March 10 & 11,
2003.
- Moon
Gem - Twilight in the Wilderness (for Frederic Church)
- Walking the Ashcroft - Dance of the Stratonauts - Zoron - Raura - Nimbus
Suite - Transitory

CIMP 284 FAB: Joe Fonda (bass), Barry Altschul (drums), Billy Bang (violin)
Transforming the Space
- FAB: the acronym for Fonda-Altschul-Bang is just that.
Joe Fonda writes this is “one of the most enjoyable recording sessions
I have done.” The
spirits were in the house and CIMP captured it all; we even left in a bit
of good-natured banter among the trio. A fun fest by FAB. Recorded February
17 & 18,
2003.
- Be

Too - Tales from Da Bronx - Song for My Mother - Coligno Battatta.
CIMP 283 Trio-X:
Joe McPhee (alto & tenor saxes), Dominic
Duval (bass), Jay Rosen (drums)
Journey
- Every Trio-X recording
is different and an occasion for anticipation as to where these 3 creative
forces will journey. Their 5th release, this
is only
the second in studio. And when the studio is the acclaimed Spirit Room,
you know you’re going to hear the richness of the instruments and the subtleties
of dynamic interplay at its best. A goody from a group acclaimed by one critic
as the more dynamic combo in creative improvised music today. Recorded February
6 & 7, 2003.

CIMP 282
Andrew Lamb (tenor sax, mismaar) Trio with Tom Abbs (bass, tuba) - Andrei
Strobert (drums)
The Pilgrimage
- Andrew Lamb has one
of the more nontraditional approaches to this music. Perhaps
it’s the influence of Kalaparush, one of his teachers. Born in 1958,
this is just Andrew’s second release, and it’s a finely measured
set: 10 originals that will engage the rhythms of both your mind and body.

CIMP 281 Adam Lane
(bass) & John Tchicai (bass clarinet, tenor sax)
DOS
- Here
is a
chance to hear the talents of Adam Lane and John Tchicai up close. Warm,
inventive, and personal, the 10 original tracks will transport you with
their imaginative and fun excursions. Many people feel Mr. Tchicai is
playing
with renewed vigor and fire these past couple of years. This should confirm
that belief. Recorded October 2 & 3, 2002.

- Tomas Ulrich (cello) - Hill Greene (bass)
The Dream Catcher (for Wilber Morris)
- Four master improvisers
meet to pay tribute to Wilber Morris on a set of exceptional originals
by Kevin Norton and Wilber Morris. Mellow and
lyrical/hard-blowing
and lyrical, this is a heart-felt and musically memorable set of music
for brass, strings, and percussion. A date with real definition. Recorded
January
6 & 7, 2003, The Spirit Room, Rossie, NY.

CIMP 279 Dylan Taylor (bass, cello) - Kelly Meashey (voice)
Songs of Living
- Hey, if you don't like
vocal dates 'cause they die after just one listening, then check this out
- it's incredible! And if you like vocals but not avant,
this will challenge you, yet is still very accessible.
Included with the standards/non-originals are 2 Dylan Taylor compositions
so poignant
and personal that one almost feels
as though they are an intruder just by listening. If you
matter-of-factly discount vocalists, give this one a try - it should make
you re-evaluate
your comfort
(or is that your discomfort?) zone. Recorded October 30 & 31,
2002, The Spirit Room, Rossie, NY.
- Straighten Up and
Fly Right - Willow Weep for Me - Valerie - Simple
Gifts/Ode to Joy - Blue Monk - Joy Spring - Losing You - Sometimes

CIMP 278 John Tchicai (tenor sax, bass clarinet) - Pierre Dorge (guitar) -
Lou Grassi (drums)
Hope is Bright Green Up North
- When John Tchicai was
the featured guest on Lou Grassi's Po Band recording (CIMP 262), they had
such a good time that John decided this would be a good
combination to pair up with his long-time associate Pierre Dorge. Dorge
is best known (and justifiably so) for leading the New Jungle Orchestra.
Here
you get a good listen to the instrumentalists in a small group setting.
One would expect John and Pierre to debut their own compositions, but the
big
surprise is that this recording marks Lou's compositional debut.
Let's hear it for the
drummer. Recorded October 1 & 2, 2002, The Spirit Room, Rossie, NY.
- Farewell Wilber
- Biciclo - Loop for Susan R. - 3 + 2 - Ballad of 9/11 - News from
Lou - Sumolle - Time to Stretch - Claira to Claremont
CIMP 277 Lucian
Ban (piano) & Alex
Harding (baritone sax) Quintet w/ Erik Torrente (alto sax) - Chris Dahlgren
(bass) - Damion Reid (drums)
Premonition
- This is a follow-up
to Lucian and Alex's soulful duo outing (CIMP 274). Here the focus is on
Lucian's fine compositions and the interplay between the horns
and rhythm. Fresh faces and fresh music from the Bop/post Bop world.
Recorded August 9, 2002, Gilbert Recital Hall, Canton, NY.
- Harmology - Serenade
for Andrew - At Last - Premonition - Mutiny - Chakra - Collision Theory
CIMP 276 Elliott Levin (tenor sax, curved soprano, flute) - Marshall Allen
(alto sax, clarinet) - Tyrone Hill (trombone) Quintet w/ Howard Cooper (bass)
- Ed Watkins (d)
Opportunities & Advantages
- Check
out that front line. Levin: one of the most robust tenor stylists around.
Allen: the
legendary sax man whose short-circuited
improvisations
are too infrequently
featured in small combos. Hill: an inventive lyrical
trombonist with a distinct sound. Put them together with longtime buddies
Cooper
and Watkins and you
have simpatico and a fun date. Real music, warm and challenging.
Philadelphia Pride

Room, Rossie, NY.

CIMP 275 Frank Lowe (sax) Quartet
with Dominic Duval (bass), Michael Carvin (drums), Bern Nix (guitar)
Lowedown & Blue
- This is Frank Lowe's
fourth CIMP session and we think this one captures the tender soul of this
tenor stylist. Recorded just days before Frank had to have
lung surgery, this concert finds him ironically more robust than
usual. But, in essence, it is a quintessential Lowe concert: full of the
compositional
and playing quirks which mark his best work. A real stylist with
giving, unselfish support from a great rhythm grouping. Recorded September
16, 2002.
- Dewey's Tune - Who
Does She Hope To Be - Four or Less - Lowe-down & Blue - Riff Raff - Waiting in Sorrow - Crazy - Little Rock's Lament
- Zoomtipski - Cherryco - Thabo - Candu
CIMP 274 Lucian
Ban (p) & Alex Harding (bari sax) Duo
Somethin' Holy
- Those who have Alex's
first trio recording (CIMP 246) will notice that he plays, in part, the
music of Lucian Ban. Now composer/pianist and baritone saxman
come together in duo. The ambience of this date is reflective of Wilber
Morris, whose spirit is referenced and imbues this session with a moving,
soulful profile.
It's a low-down uplifting concert, and beautifully expressive. Recorded
August 8, 2002.
- Invocation
for Wilber - Drifting - Somethin' Holy - Resonance - Time for Trane/Night on Earth
- African Blutopia - African Flower
CIMP 273 Carl Grubbs (sax) Quartet with Odean Pope (sax), Chris Sullivan (b),
Newman Taylor Baker (drums)
Stepping Around the Giant
- The liner notes tell
the whole story about this date. Suffice it to say, those who have been
waiting 30 years to hear the promise of Carl Grubbs
to be met
will have to look no further than this emotionally charged session. And
if you're an Odean Pope fan, this is cause for a double amen. This was
a very
special occasion for all involved and it translates to the listener.
Recorded July 30 & 31, 2002.
- Stepping Around
the Giant - Betty Jo and David - Sax Talk II - July - Sax Talk - Kai's
Mood - Four - Two Fellas
CIMP 272 Ursel Schlicht (p) - Steve Swell (tbn) Quartet with Tom Abbs (bass/tuba),
Geoff Mann (drums/trumpet)
Poets of the Now
- For Schlicht and Swell,
this is a follow-up to their very exciting Sound Quest recording on Cadence
Jazz Records. Here the group moves more into composed structures
with Ms. Schlicht, in particular, showing a softer side. But make
no mistakes - this is post-Bop creative improvised music, and yet another
fresh look at Steve
Swell whose growing reputation is finally catching up to his talents.
Form, variety, and passion combine here for meaty listening. Recorded July
18, 2002.
- Poets of the Now
- 12/2 - Han Bennink - Bluesy - Barbara Ellen - Ursel Surveying the
Scene - Orbicularis Oris
CIMP 271 David Wertman (bass) - Charlie Kohlhase (sax) - Lou Grassi (drums)
NorthCountry Pie
- Kohlhase and Grassi
are familiar names to improvised listeners, but bassist David Wertman has
been off the creative improvised recording scene since
the 1980s. And there are enough bass features
that you'll see he's a talent with
more than journeyman abilities. Fresh music from
fresh personalities, accessible but still demanding. Recorded June 17 & 18,
2002.
- Sky - Straight Talk
- Pig Pie - Wise One - Sweet Pie - Morning Improv - Grace - R&D
#2 - Mysteries of Bird Migration
CIMP 270 Alex Harding
(baritone sax) - Dominic Duval (bass) - Jay Rosen (drums)
Invocation for Pepper
- This trio date is a
follow-up to Alex's "FreeFlow" recording (CIMP 246), but here the emphasis
is on standards, opening with Alex's "Invocation" to the spirit
of fellow Motowner and bari player, Pepper Adams. It's
a Jazz date all the way: the power of Alex Harding's baritone sax in the
company of the celebrated rhythm team of Duval & Rosen. Recorded June 6 & 7,
2002.
- Invocation - Bolivia
- Dolphin Dance - Goodbye Porkpie Hat - Julian - Eternal Triangle - Lament
- You Don't Know What Love Is - Jitterbug Waltz - Alex's Goodbye
CIMP 269 David Taylor
(bass trombone) Trio with Dominic Duval (bass), Jay Rosen (drums)
Doppelganger
- Dave Taylor is a legend
among trombonists. The King of the Bass Trombone, he's been on hundreds
of
commercial recordings. What many don't realize is that Dave's creative
improvised
impulses are mighty but largely untapped. Here he shows that his technique
can go head to head with his imagination and everyone benefits. This tour
de force ends with a wonderful take on "Home On the Range." Recorded
May 9 & 10, 2002.
- Double Tear - I'm Not

CIMP 268 Bob Washington
(voice) Trio with Steve Swell (trombone) and Dominic Duval (bass)
Recollections of Darby Hicks
- This date is essentially
a "brother's" narrative of growing up in America from the pre- WWII
years. It's a story funny, funky, and poignant, and delivered with improvised
surroundings which suggest some parallels to the collaboration between Charles
Mingus and Jean Shephard on "The Clown." A good tale, well told
with outstanding improvisations. Recorded April 23 & 24, 2002.

CIMP 267
Khan Jamal (vibes, African balafon) Quintet with Jemeel Moondoc (alto sax), Roy
Campbell (trumpet, flugelhorn), Dylan Taylor (bass), and Dwight James (drums)
Balafon Dance
- Khan reunites
with a group of old friends and colleagues on this remarkable session of
composition and energy. Khan Jamal is one of the most distinctive voices
in creative music
in both sound and compositional substance. This is his first recording in
5 years and only his second in 13. He's careful and deliberate about his
music
but presents for the listener finished, fully-formed, and wonderfully listenable
adventures in music. This concert offers music accessible to a broad range
of tastes but remains always uncompromising in its delivery and statement.
Recorded March 18 & 19, 2002.
- Odean - Just Us - Principle - Balafon Dance - Summertime - African Rhythm Tongues

CIMP 266 Matt Lavelle (trumpet,
flugelhorn, pocket trumpet, bass clarinet) Quartet with Ras Moshe (tenor
saxophone), Francois Grillot (bass), and Lou
Grassi (drums)
Handling the Moment
- This
release presents the Matt Lavelle Quartet. A touch of avant, of Ra,
of funk and Blues, this group defines its
own self
with a set of 8 tracks that are both inside and out, but always within
the CIMP perimeter of good music
- without qualification. Recorded March 4 & 5, 2002.
- Amadou's Passage - The
Kitchen - Creator School - Chant 1 - Chant 2 - Roy
Campbell - Mars and
Aries - The 5
Faces
CIMP 265 John O'Gallagher (as),
Tony Malaby (ts), John Hebert (b), Jeff Williams (d)
Axiom
- The John O'Gallagher Quartet.
Yet another debut by an artist with notable instrumental and compositional
talents. Over a year in preparation, this session was recorded at the end
of a short tour by the group and is notable for the connectedness of the 2-sax
frontline and the group as a whole. With liner notes that clearly illuminate
the chronology and background of the session, it's a fine companion to music
that is both muscular and, at times, hauntingly beautiful. Fresh faces, fresh
music.
- Golden Ruby - Hydraulics -
Things Have Changed - Plain Air
- Triple T - Homunculus - Gravity - Indonesian Folk Song - Song
CIMP 264 Daniel Carter (as/ts/clt/tpt/flt),
Steve Swell (tbn), Tom Abbs (b/tuba), and Dave Brandt (d)
The Transcendentalists: Real Time Messengers
- Eight cuts of coherent and inspired
improvisations that will reward close listening with inspiration and renewal
of energy. Creative improvised chamber music.
- The
Nowness of Pure Potentiality - The Spirit of Aspirations Beyond -

CIMP 263 Adam Lane (b),John
Tchicai, (ts), Paul Smoker (tpt), Barry Altschul (d)
Fo(u)r Being(s)
- This is bassist Adam Lane's third
release. His first 2 offered a thunderous view of his writing/arranging work
for larger groups. Again, the listener is treated to Adam Lane's compositional
abilities, and, in addition, is better able to hear his instrumental abilities,
well-exposed over the 6 tracks. In this all-star company there's no place
to hide and Adam proves he's up to the company he keeps.
- Intonations
for Being - In the center of the earth, looking for Mike - House of
Elegant - Without Being - It happened to us naturally - The Band Is
CIMP 262 Lou Grassi (d), Paul
Smoker (tpt), Art Baron (tbn), Perry Robinson (clt), Wilber Morris(b), John Tchicai
(ts/b clt/flt)
comPOsed
- The latest from Lou Grassi's PoBand.
This time the guest artist is John Tchicai. This concert by the PoBand is
unique for a number of reasons (besides the always-fresh improvisations and
presence of guest John Tchicai) in that, for the first time it deals with
a compositional framework; Art Baron joins the band; and, sadly, this was
the late Wilber Morris' last outing with the band that he helped establish
in 1995. Thankfully, Wilber's spirit and voice (instrumentally and vocally)
is well represented on the date. Eight wondrous cuts.

CIMP 260 Tristan Honsinger (cello,
voice), Jean Derome (alto saxophone, flute, sounds, megaphone), John Heward (drums)
Adventure In the Looking Glass
- Three veteran characters bring
together their musical perspectives voiced in the dadaist/avant vocabulary
of improvised music. Ten tracks display a wide variety of approaches, textures,
tempos and coloring and include a unique interpretation of Lewis Carroll's
Jabberwocky.
- Omama
McGowran – Of Whores and Pebbles – Bondly Yours – Impossible
no Eggs! – Why? – Down the Rabbit-hole – Franz Schubird – Beware the Jabberwock – Alice
Dancing at the Wonderland – Out of the hole
CIMP 259 Jean-Luc Guionnet (alto
saxophone), Edward Perraud (drums)
Heur
- Guionnet & Perraud
are a remarkable duo: in early 2000 they began developing the strategy
of an hour's continuous
duologue of instant composition. And, except for that strategy, there are
no preconceived structures on this set. It asks a lot of the musicians
and
demands a lot of the listener. Music without a net that will sustain your
listening.
CIMP 258 Joe Rosenberg (soprano saxophone)
Quartet, Jean-Luc Guionnet (alto saxophone), Mark Helias (bass), Edward Perraud
(drums)
Do What We Must
Do
- Joe Rosenberg writes and executes
music of real substance. Within his sensical structure he allows a rich organic
development to take place and unfold naturally. This is a no-fat concert and
it will reward discriminant listening.
- Jean-Truc:
take 1 – Nouvelle Afrique – a la Carte – On Three –

CIMP 257 Joe McPhee (tenor saxophone,
flugelhorn, alto clarinet)'s Bluette, Joe Giardullo (flute, bass clarinet), Michael
Bisio (bass), Dominic Duval (bass)
Let Paul Robeson Sing
- Joe McPhee's Bluette returns for
a set inspired by Paul Robeson. Referencing some of the events and music of
Robeson, this episodic material of both original and traditional music spreads
over 7 tracks in a moving journey.
- Episode I: Renaissance
- Harlem Spiritual
- Episode II:

Obbligato
- Integrating material
from a broad idiomatic range including Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Randy
Newman, Jimi Hendrix, Ornette Coleman, Claude Thornhill, Albert Ayler and
others, vocalist extraordinaire Mary LaRose leads a strong improvising quartet.
Out of the tradition but clearly of today and tomorrow, this is music as challenging
as it is sensual.
- Reincarnation

Up and Down – What Reason Could I Give – Farmer's Market –
Hyperballad – I'm Beginning to See the Light – Snowfall –

CIMP 255 Steve Lehman (alto &
sopranino sax, flute) Quintet with Roy Campbell (trumpet, pocket trumpet, flugelhorn),
Kevin ONeil (electric guitar), John Hebert (bass), and Kevin Norton (percussion,
vibraphone)
Camoflage
- This is
Volume 2 of the impressive debut from saxman Steve Lehman and his quintet:
Volume 2,
not leftovers; you know CIMP would never compromise the music. In this case,
it is music out of the Jackie McLean Anthony Braxton tradition, but
roots, not retreads. Recorded May 14 & 15, 2001.

Ready for Action
- This is an intense and
dense set of improvised music bringing together 2 visceral reedmen on a
program of originals
and improvs. Music with mainstream sensibilities but served up with an avant
passion. Recorded August 27 & 28, 2001.

CIMP 252 T.J. Graham (vocals) with
Rory Stuart (guitar)
Standards and Insights
- Heres something for the
lovers of standards and vocals: T.J. Graham, backed only by the sensitive
artistry of guitarist Rory Stuart. It takes guts to record a vocal record
with our audiophile demands: theres no place to hide, no fix in
the mix. Recorded July 23 and 24, 2001.

CIMP 251 Burton Greene (piano) with

Peace Beyond Conflict

pianist Burton Greenes most playful and lyrical outings. A very engaging
program with the formidable bassist Mark Dresser serving as both foundation
and backboard
to this delightful recording. Recorded July 19, 2001.

CIMP 250 Charles Eubanks (solo piano)
New Beginnings
- Charles Eubanks, veteran of the
60's Motown studios, respected sideman in bands and on recordings of Oliver
Lake, Dewey Redman, Kevin Eubanks, etc., has never recorded as a leader prior
to this. Now the world at large gets to hear why Mr. Eubanks, a musician's
musician, is so highly respected. Here is the musing of a true Jazz eclectic
in a style that may at times suggest a range from Jimmy Yancey to Mal Waldron
and beyond. Narrative and impressionistic, he sounds like no other in a program
as accessible as it is adventurous. Recorded June 19, 2001.

CIMP 249 Fred Hess (tenor sax) Quartet
with Paul Smoker (trumpet), Ken Filiano (bass), Damon Short (drums)
Exposed
- Noted for establishing
the Boulder Creative Music Ensemble in the mid-80's, composer, arranger,
and tenor saxman
Fred Hess takes a rare excursion outside of that role to expose his compositions
and sax in a dynamic quartet. If Mr. Hess' previous activities have missed
your attention, this release should put him in your sights. It's one of
his
best (we might even immodestly suggest that it is his best) to date. Recorded
June 11 & 12, 2001.
- Cruise - JHM - Changing Spectra

CIMP 248 Ned Rothenberg (clarinet,
bass clarinet, alto sax) and Denman Maroney (piano)
Tools of the Trade
- Denman Maroney's acoustic piano
and prepared piano reach a perfect co-existence and integration on this duet
with multi reedist Ned Rothenberg. A combination of exciting improvs and compositions,
this is music that is mature, expert and soul-warming while still challenging
the intellect. New music, new maturity. Recorded June 5, 2001.

CIMP 247 Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre
(tenor sax) & the Light, with Jesse Dulman (tuba) and Ravish Momin (drums)
South Eastern
- Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre,
after almost a half century in music, has been documented on only a handful
of sessions
as leader or sideman. Even amid these, this offering is unique in its instrumentation
and the obtuse melodies of this whistle-able yet angular music. 10 cuts,
10
ponderables. Recorded May 29 & 30, 2001.

CIMP 246 Alex Harding (baritone sax)
Trio with Chris Dahlgren (bass) and Jimmy Weinstein (drums)
Freeflow
- The debut album for
this Detroit native. Alex Harding's baritone comes out of the tradition
of Harry Carney,
Leo Parker, and Pepper Adams and roars into today in its own funky way. He
huffs and he puffs and he almost blows the CIMP house down. Recorded May
22 & 23, 2001.

Kevin O'Neil (guitar), John Hebert (bass), Kevin Norton (percussion,
vibes)
Structural Fire
- Steve Lehman is atypical
of most CIMP artists in that he is young but typical in that he has a clear
understanding
of what he wants to express. A student of both Jackie McLean and Anthony
Braxton, he leads a hard blowing set of notable originals and a refreshing
visit into
the land of 21st century hard bop. Recorded May 14 & 15, 2001.

Improvising Chamber Ensemble with Howard Johnson (reeds), Vincent Chancey (French

Two Letters I'll Keep
- On her debut recording
as leader, Rosi Hertlein is more than a violinist, she proves to also be
an arranger
and organizer of improvised sound that combines pastoral subtlety and flow
with thoughtful Free improvisation. This is an atypical dynamic with the
sextet
working within the ambiance and structure of a group sound or coordinate.

- William Gagliardi leads
a tasty hard bop come free bop session featuring his notable compositions
and the
inspired front line mix of the leader's torqued sax with the flying inventiveness
of Kenny Wessel's hard body guitar. Listen to this date and you ask yourself
why is this this man's first release in 54 years. Recorded Feb. 20 & 21,

well received debut recording on Cadence Jazz Records, reedman Avram Fefer

the careers of these 2 master improvisers. Recorded February 29, 2000.
CIMP 221 Nils Wogram (trombone) Konrad
Bauer (trombone) Dominic Duval (bass)
Serious Fun Plus
One
- If you heard the duo concert (CIMP
212) of trombonists Conny Bauer and Nils Wogram, you will NOT know what to
expect from this trio outing. The program of eleven inventions is a rich,
varied and remarkably broad adventure in improvisation. Recorded September
14, 1999

CIMP 220 Kahil El'Zabar (percussion)
with David Murray (tenor sax)
One World Family
- Much has transpired
since Kahil El'Zabar and David Murray's first pairing on record back in
the 1980's. Kahil's
strong sense of community and the musical telepathy he feels with David Murray
are displayed throughout this concert. Just a duo, with nowhere to hide.
Like
all CIMP dates, recorded live and direct to 2 tracks with no fades, no splices,
no dubs; just musical talent and integrity. Recorded March 28 & 29,
2000.

Bob Magnuson (tenor & alto sax) - Ken Filiano (bass) - Lou Grassi (drums)
Large Music 1
- As melodic as a classic hard bop
date and as spontaneous as improvised artistry gets, this is Part One of a
killer session featuring this very collective and supportive group producing
very large music. Recorded March 6, 2000.
CIMP 218 Phil Haynes (drums) - Herb
Robertson (cornet, trumpet) Quintet with Ned Rothenberg (bass clarinet, clarinet),
Vinny Golia (clarinet, E flat soprano clarinet, E flat alto, bass clarinet), Ken
Filiano (bass)
Brooklyn-Berlin
- Original music, by Robertson
and Haynes, presented especially for this occasion. Music which will continue
to reward repeated listening, not out of familiarity or a reliance on tried
and true cliché, but out of the richness of its structure and invention.

CIMP 217 Ken Simon (tenor & soprano
sax) Quartet with Jorge Sylvester (alto & soprano sax), Greg Maker (bass),
and Barry Altschul (drums)
Another Side
- Ken Simon displays a
serenity and lyricism that has until now been out of the forefront of his
dynamic sax
work. Extended playing over two Simon originals along with one composition
each from Jerome Kern and John Coltrane makes for great concert listening
and heralds the return of drum master Barry Altschul to the recording scene.
Recorded Feb. 21 & 22, 2000.
- Sun-Modes
- Syeeda's Song Flute - No Contact - Yesterdays
CIMP 216 The Resonance Impeders:
Briggan Krauss (alto sax), Chris Dahlgren (bass), Jay Rosen (drums)
At All Costs
Unknown
- The Resonance Impeders
are, if nothing else, quirky in composition, delivery and arrangement.
After 4 years
together they deliver a coordinated music that is both rich in humor and
rhythm and packs an emotional punch. No joking. Good listening. Recorded
Feb. 7 & 8, 2000.

CIMP 215 Dominic Duval (bass)
Anniversary
- A solo bass recording
that is a celebration of the heart and mind. Enjoyable either in close
dedicated listening
or in more ephemeral surroundings, either way it's a joy. There is nothing
tedious about this flowering of invention as it moves seemlessly over a
dozen
offerings. Recorded January 19 & 20, 2000.

Quintet with Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre (tenor sax), Mads Thorsen (guitar), Brian
Smith (bass), Ronnie Burrage (drums)
Realities: Old & New
- A session that can be seen as
a modern field recording as the concert clearly shows the evolutionary steps
that bring about the wonders of Creative Improvised Music. The 10 tracks,
issued in the order in which they were played, are as instructive as they
are enjoyable. A unique unfolding. Recorded January 5, 2000.

- From the Bay Area, three
veteran but emerging giants of the creative improvising scene. Together
they bring
some 60 years of collective, and often connected, experience for a dynamic
program of 12 structured but completely improvised statements in a very
satisfying
contrast of sound coloring and passion. Recorded Oct. 18 & 19, 1999.

CIMP 212 Nils Wogram (trombone) and
Konrad Bauer (trombone)
Serious Fun
- Konrad Bauer is acknowledged
as one of the post-Mangelsdorff fathers of the improvised trombone. Nils
Wogram,
young enough to be his son, is quickly rising in the ranks, from inside music
music to outside music. The setting: a trombone duo. The strategy: extemporaneous
improvisation. The results: 16 tracks of rewarding invention with the usual
clear CIMP dynamic detailing that the listener can either follow from one
side or the other, or just enjoy the whole in a concert of joyful interaction.
Recorded Sept. 12 & 13, 1999.

CIMP 211 Jay Rosen (drums, hand drums)
Quartet with Vinny Golia (reeds), Paul Smoker (trumpet), Mark Whitecage (reeds)
Canticles for
the New Millenium
- Jay Rosen, sensitive
and dynamic drummer on many fine CIMP sessions, steps out for his debut
as a leader and
it's impressive. Leading a bassless quartet made up of some of today's most
dymnamic players, he not only lifts and drives some intense music but manages
to integrate his dynamics in both a supportive and take-charge way. Rosen
with Golia, Smoker, and Whitecage: a gutsy move with wondrous results.
Recorded
Sept. 1 & 2, 1999.

pocket trumpet), David Bindman (tenor sax), Sam Bardfeld (violin), Drew Gress
(double bass)
The Lowdown
- Ehran Elisha likes to
write in long form. The center of this release is The Lowedown, a 4 part
piece which
traverses many paths on its way to a satisfying conclusion. The two other
tunes are duets between Bill Lowe and Elisha. Recorded August 9 & 10,
1999.
